about

The Icelandic version of American song "Silver Bells", written in 1950. Originally this song was supposed to be called "Tinkle Bells" until Mr. Livingston's wife informed him of the slang meaning of the word 'tinkle'. The Icelandic words are more indicative of a beautiful and celebratory town that's covered in snow, with everyone behaving joyfully due to Christmastime cheer.

lyrics

Jólasnjórinn svífur niður
yfir stræti og torg,
svífur ofan úr skýjunum niður.
Nú er allt sem leyst úr læðing,
enginn leiði né sorg.
Nú er lífsgleðin ríkjandi í borg.

Jólasnjór, jólasnjór,
Jólasnjór, jólasnjór,
Skínandi umvefur allt.
Sindrandi, sindrandi,
Tindrandi, tindrandi,
Glitrandi himnanna skart.

Ljósin ljóma, bjöllur hljóma,
óma hlátrar og sköll,
allir brosa og heilsast með gleði.
Ys og læti, líf og kæti,
hljómar veröldin öll,
jólagleði í hreysi og höll.

Jólasnjór, jólasnjór,
Jólasnjór, jólasnjór,
Skínandi umvefur allt.
Sindrandi, sindrandi,
Tindrandi, tindrandi,
Glitrandi himnanna skart.
